• Dog found wandering as stray twice in Miami with no collar no tags, reported dog stolen when rescue was called by chip maker and re-rescued the dog

Ana: I too had difficulty getting Toby's expenses covered. Toby was rescued from the Rock Pit by me and a group of other volunteers on 12/17/15 AFTER having received written confirmation from Lisa that Paws 4 You would take him. There was another rescue offer, but being that I am in Miami and the other rescue was up north I decided it would be better for me to foster for Paws. Toby's expenses so far have totaled $1,672.50. The volunteers who have been involved with Toby's rescueing from the beginning setup a fundraiser and were able to get some very generous people to donate $920. This has left me at $752.50 out of pocket (plus food, harness, bed..etc, the extras that I am always ok to cover whenever I foster). After reaching out to Lisa several times and never getting these expenses covered I decided to reach out to the rescue on Monday by sending them an email to info@paws4you.org. I received a reply that was very much out of character for a respected organization like Paws, which as far as Im concerned has always been known for its professionalism.
Later in the evening I received a call from someone within the rescue's upper management. This person had called me to apologize for the reply I received, confirming to me that the person who replied to my email was Lisa Clifford Merkin. We had a lengthy conversation and I was told that Lisa's position within Paws was that of a volunteer and that one of her main responsibilities was to help them with their info@paws4you.org email by sifting through the messages and seeing that the correct person within the organization received those messages, or to reply herself when seen fit. The person I spoke with was extremely apologetic, professional, and courteous and expressed much concern for all the dogs who are not being cared for within their standards of rescuing. This person made it clear that Paws 4 You is just recently learning of all these dogs that are supposedly in their name. One of the main points brought up was the fact that they (like most legit rescues) have their own network of vets with whom they have a rescue account with and that no one should be putting their own money up front. What I have taken from this thread is that there have been many other people affected by this malpractice, and the purpose of this message is to let people know that Lisa is no longer affiliated with this rescue so that this doesnt happen again. The details offered above serve to let others know that if you too have been trying to contact the rescue and either received an email reply that was out of character or that didnt get you anywhere, it most likely did not come from actual officers at Paws 4 You. I hope this clears up some of the confusion and that your image of the rescue has not been tarnished. I too was shocked that they would be rescuing this way and although this is a very unfortunate situation, I am glad that this is all coming to light. These are good people doing great things. Please dont let one person make you think otherwise.
